The 5 Big Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make Before Franchising

(And Why These Mistakes Can Destroy the Whole Brand)

Everyone wants the success of franchising —
more branches, more income, more reach.

But in my 35 years of mentoring entrepreneurs,
I’ve seen more businesses FAIL before franchising
than succeed after franchising.

Why?

Because they made fatal mistakes long before they even launched the franchise.

Let’s talk about the mistakes that kill a business before expansion even begins.

❗ 1️⃣ Mistake: Franchising a Business That Isn’t Systemized

Ito ang pinakakommon.

Some business owners think:

“Pwede na yan, successful naman kami.”
“Marami naman bumibili.”
“Madaling ituro.”

Pero pag tinanong:

✔ May SOP ba?
✔ May costing sheet?
✔ May recipe card?
✔ May operations manual?
✔ May training program?

Tahimik ang lahat.

Franchising is NOT based on success.
It is based on consistency.

If your business depends on YOU,
it is not franchise-ready.

❗ 2️⃣ Mistake: Copying Other Franchise Packages Without Understanding the Model

Common mindset:

“Gayahin ko na lang presyo ng competitor.”
“Pareho din naman kami.”
“Standard naman ang franchise fee.”

This is dangerous.

Your franchise package must reflect:

✔ your profit model
✔ your ROI timeline
✔ your operational cost
✔ your brand value
✔ your training structure

Hindi pwedeng templado.
Dapat kalkulado.

❗ 3️⃣ Mistake: Rushing the Franchise Documents Just to “Start Selling”

Marami ang nagmamadali magbenta ng franchise.

Ang gusto agad:
franchise fee.

Pero wala pa:

❌ legal documents
❌ franchise manual
❌ clear terms
❌ brand usage guidelines
❌ franchisee protection
❌ intellectual property setup

Franchising is a long-term marriage.
Hindi ito one-night business.

If you rush the foundation,
the whole structure collapses.

❗ 4️⃣ Mistake: Accepting ANY Interested Franchisee

Ito ang pinakamabilis na paraan masira brand.

Some owners say:

“Basta may pambayad — okay na.”

BIG mistake.

A franchisee should be:

✔ coachable
✔ committed
✔ aligned sa values mo
✔ financially ready
✔ hands-on
✔ serious about success

A bad franchisee
will destroy your reputation faster than any competitor.

Choose wisely.
Not emotionally.

❗ 5️⃣ Mistake: Thinking Franchising Is an “Easy Money” Shortcut

Ito ang harsh truth:

Maraming gumagawa ng franchise
hindi dahil ready sila —
pero dahil kailangan nila ng pera.

Franchising is NOT:

❌ a quick solution to cash problems
❌ a way to fund your personal lifestyle
❌ instant revenue
❌ “passive income” agad

Franchising works only when the business model
is scalable, documented, and supported.

It’s not for the desperate.
It’s for the prepared.

💡 Franchising Is Not a Reward — It’s a Responsibility

Before you expand, you must:

  • protect your brand
  • prepare your systems
  • train your team
  • support your franchisees
  • strengthen your operations

Your brand will be in many hands.
Make sure your hands are steady before you let others hold it.

👉 What I, as a Business Mentor with 35 Years Experience, Would Think and Recommend

After decades of guiding MSMEs who became national brands,
eto lagi kong advices:

✔ Fix internal systems BEFORE franchising
✔ Document everything (SOP, costing, operations)
✔ Don’t rush — build the foundation
✔ Choose franchisees who fit your culture
✔ Focus on support, not sales
✔ Build a franchise that protects BOTH sides
✔ Treat franchising like a long-term partnership, not a quick revenue stream

My strongest recommendation:

Huwag kang mag-franchise para kumita.
Mag-franchise para tumagal.

Longevity before revenue.
Integrity before expansion.
